A new paper published by Dr. Ben Gleason and former ISU student Dr. Sam von Gillern explores how young people develop digital citizenship using social media. The paper is titled “Digital Citizenship with Social Media: Participatory Practices of Teaching and Learning in Secondary Education” and was published in the Journal of Educational Technology & Society. This paper examined how digital citizenship invites new forms of participation, encouraging learners to contribute to society through their online presence, their social activities, and their connections to academic subjects such as social studies, government, and politics. Digital citizenship is an important topic for us in the CTLT, as we consider the ways that learners can develop online practices that balance risk and reward, and how learners can participate in society using digital tools.
